“Discontent with status-quo” paved way for Trump victory: Bond

Former Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond says no matter how you feel about the result of the US Presidential election, Donald Trump’s win was very convincing.

“Americans made their choice, and President Trump will have an opportunity to carry out the agenda he laid out for Americans,” she said.

Bond added with Kamala Harris’ defeat, the Oval Office remains an elected office with a glass ceiling.

“I think that is one of the stories, that this election once again lays out for us as women, that hopefully at some point in the future, there will be an opportunity for a woman to serve as President of the United States of America,” Bond said.

“It remains a glass ceiling, I think there are many women who will feel that, there are many women who will be concerned about the women’s rights issues, and so that will all continue to be part of the future of the United States.”

Bond said similar to what we’ve seen in our province, there was clearly discontent with the status-quo in the states.

“When you think about even the election we had recently here in British Columbia, people are concerned about affordability, they are concerned about the economy,” she said.

“They want to make sure that people have a chance to buy a home and to get ahead and do those kinds of things, that was a primary component of the discussion that President Trump laid out in his campaign, and it does show us that the economy matters. People, I think, are tired of struggling, we saw that in British Columbia, and I think we’ve seen that reflected in a major way in the United States.”

Bond said one thing to keep an eye on when it comes to how the results will impact our province will be economic policies the President-elect has laid out.

“What do tariffs looks like, we look at America first, those kinds of things,” she said.

“I think the relationship, obviously there has been constructive work in the past with the United States, so I think it will be interesting to see how these policies of this President in his agenda impact not just British Columbia but of course our country.”
