Local CUPW President remains confident Postal workers will receive new contract

Contract talks remain ongoing between Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers – despite the threat of a strike.

The 55-thousand members were in a legal strike position as of yesterday (Sunday) but must give 72-hours notice to walk out – in turn, the employers could also lockout postal workers.

CUPW Local 812 President, Rick Harris told Vista Radio staff in the north remain on the job delivering packages to those who need them.

“We have 204 members here in our local. That encompasses, Mackenzie, Vanderhoof, Burns Lake and, Fraser Lake as well as Prince George. Absolutely, it is business as usual, we will keep doing what we are doing until we are told otherwise.”

Harris believes the goal of accomplishing a brand new contract is still very much in sight.

“Not only could be it a strike, but there could also be a lockout. That is what happened to us in 2018 by the employer. I think everybody is hopeful, everyone wants to keep working – I know I have said this before and I will keep saying it until this thing is settled and that is we would like a negotiated contract.”

“From a local perspective, we are all hopeful for that.”

Both sides have stated there will be no strike or lockout notice as long as talks are productive.
