More harsh reviews are rolling in for the Province-wide student information system My-Ed BC… And this time, they aren’t security related.
CUPE 3742 President Karen Wong and recording secretary Brenda Hodgkinson attended Tuesday night’s SD 57 meeting armed with letter from clerical workers tearing into the efficiency of the system and the rise in overtime hours worked.
Cupe 3742 President Karen Wong says the problem doesn’t lie with CUPE workers, or the My-Ed BC team, but with the program itself, as displayed in one worker’s letter.
“I am not a person who has problems working with a new computer system. I don’t have problems with changes, and I welcome new technology with open arms,” she quoted, “But I do have a problem with having to use a system that is not ready to be launched.”
The $95 million system replaced BCeSIS province-wide this year.
Many workers have already chalked up more than 20 hours of overtime, while student contact has been buried under a maze of information… A maze where doctor’s and dentist’s numbers show up before parent’s phones, and it can take up to 8 minutes per child to enter basic information.
One clerk reported writing timetables by hand because the system wouldn’t allow her to print.
“It’s faster to run down the hallway and locate a child in a crowd of 1,100 kids than to access information on MyEdBC,” read another letter.
The slew of criticism left the board at a standstill, before Chair Tony Cable made a motion to write a letter outlining the concerns to the Minister of Education.
