The Prince George Airport Authority has donated a pair of Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting trucks to Barkerville Historic Town and Park.
“Community support is at the core of what we do as a local airport authority, it’s part of our mandate, and we’re really pleased to be able to do this,” said Prince George Airport Authority President and CEO Gord Duke.
“It gives these trucks a second life, and certainly given the perilous summer that Barkerville had, our whole staff is really pleased to be able to do this.”
Duke added these fire trucks are designed for responding to an aircraft crash, but they’ll be able to go where they need to go for Barkerville.
“They’re four by four, very large, they’ll be able to go into the bush and knock down any approaching fire,” he explained.
This summer, Barkerville was threatened by a wildfire that got within three kilometres of the historic town.
“This just helps bolster the equipment that we already have to be able to look after the town and protect it from any fires that could happen, whether it be wildfire or just one of our buildings catching fire,” said Barkerville’s Manager of Public Programming and Media Stewart Cawood.
“We do have some equipment on hand, but being a non-profit organization, that equipment does get outdated fairly quickly, so this will just help keep our town safe.”
In light of this summer’s fire, Cawood said the new trucks brings peace of mind that they will be able to fight fires in the area.
