The third annual ‘Bank of Gratitude’ event is aiming to celebrate the Fraser River.
People are encouraged to bring their own art material to the base of the CN Rail bridge from 10 to 2:30 tomorrow.
“World Rivers Day happens the last Sunday of September every year, so I started with this event 3 years ago,” explains Founder and eco-spiritual artist Danielea Castell, “It was after I found out the long-standing Rivers Day Music Festival in Prince George would not be happening anymore… Rivers Day is like a birthday party for the rivers!”
Lheidli T’enneh artist Kym Gouchie will co-host the event, while people are encouraged to bring art supplies to decorate the area.
Popular new additions include kid’s activities, and the first 50 people to complete their gratitude and art making time on the riverbank receive a free tap bracelet for their water tap at home.
One popular new addition last year was a ‘prayer pot’, a clay pot with First-Nations roots that had a paper message and water inside.
“Four pots were buried along the Fraser riverbank last year,” says Castell, “They’re still there, and the idea is that the clay is dissolving, and the prayers we put inside in the water are flowing into Mother Earth.”
7 other communities in BC and Alberta have picked up on the idea of celebrating World Rivers Day along the riverbank, including Likely and Edmonton.
