New playground equipment could be on the way for Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park.
According to a report going before Prince George City Council at tomorrow’s (Monday) meeting, the current playground was installed in 2000, and has reached the end of it’s useful life.
“The wooden structure does not meet current play area design standards for accessibility and is generally in poor condition,” the report reads.
“A playground safety audit in 2021 recommended that reinvestment is necessary and should be a top priority for the City of Prince George.”
The report states work began on phase one of the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Playground Renewal Project earlier this year, by choosing to work with Canadian Recreation Solutions to design a playground, “that is 100 per cent representative of the unique geography and diverse culture of Prince George.”
Phase two of the project is scheduled for construction in 2025, including a complete archaeological impact assessment report.
“The entirety of the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park is a protected archaeological site that requires archaeological monitoring and site mitigation obligations under the Heritage Conservation Act,” the report reads.
“Considering the high archaeological sensitivity and cultural value of the area, innovative approaches will be employed to minimize earthwork and unnecessary disturbances.”
This means electromagnetic and ground penetrating radar will be used to survey they area, which is scheduled to be done this fall.
The project is estimated to require $3 million in funding.
