Bear season is coming to a close, and the Northern Bear Awareness Society is reminding residents to keep attractants away.
While hibernation is underway, bears will still be looking for food to prepare for the winter months, and if it can be found, there’s the potential they can return next year.
Board Member, Lisa Cran gives tips on what can be done to prevent bears.
“That means making sure any stray apples that are still on trees have been picked, as well as any berries or other attractant crops.” says Cran
“We need to make sure we’re securing our garbage so, if it’s possible, put it in a garage or secured shed. If you don’t have those options, at a minimum we recommend getting a ratchet strap.”
Cran says if attractants are secured, bears will ensure they’re secured the following years until they give up.
She added anyone decorating for Halloween should keep pumpkins indoors, and only put them out Halloween night, as bears and other wildlife eat pumpkins.
As for bear activity in Prince George, Cran says this year is a little lower than average as of July but usually gets higher in August, September, and October.
