Prince George City Council is in Vancouver this week for the Annual Union of BC Municipalities Conference. (UBCM)
The UBCM consists of 187 local and First Nations governments throughout the province.
“They are really an advocacy or lobbying body that push forward priorities on behalf of the UBCM membership,” said Prince George City Councillor Cori Ramsay, who also serves as a Director at Large on the UBCM Executive.
For the City of Prince George, Ramsay said some of the priorities at the conference include homelessness, housing and mental health and addictions.
She added our City Council has several meetings with Provincial Ministers, such as Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon, Mental Health and Addictions Minister Jennifer Whiteside, Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Minsiter Bowinn Ma, and Premier David Eby.
“We have a resolution this week which will go before the membership, asking for support for a central emergency operations centre,” Ramsay explained.
“We’ve been going through wildfire season, as well as freshet season, accepting evacuees into the city. Having a centralized emergency operations centre I think would help just with continuity, I think we had to move the EOC eight times this last year.”
Ramsay noted there are around 267 resolutions around different municipalities’ different priorities up for debate at the conference this week.
