The Prince George RCMP celebrated the tenth anniversary of its “new” detachment with a block party on Fifth Avenue today. (Saturday)
“We’ve got multiple units from inside the detachment out here to talk to people about what their job is, what role they play in the detachment life,” said Media Relations Officer Cpl. Jennifer Cooper.
“We thought with the tenth anniversary it was a really good opportunity for us to come out into the community and speak with people about how policing has changed in the last ten years, what units we have now that maybe we didn’t have when we first opened the detachment, and just get some exposure, remind the public that we’re out here, and that we’re part of the community too.”
Cooper said policing has vastly changed within Prince George in the last ten years, with technology being one of the biggest changes.
“Not only the way that we investigate, but how technology is used within the public,” she explained.
“Being more in the public eye with cellphones and video cameras and video surveillance.”
Cooper said that helps them as well.
“Just last week we caught a prolific offender using video surveillance, so I think it’s probably been one of the biggest changes so far.”
