A new medical textbook is trying to bring more Indigenous perspective into the classroom.
The textbook entitled Determinants of Indigenous Peoples’ Health in Canada: Beyond the Social was edited in part by two UNBC professors and aims to fill a gap in Canadian Health Education.
“It`s a compilation of chapters that are almost entirely authored by Indigenous activists, scholars and health care professionals” said Co-editor Sarah De Leeuw. “It is the first of it’s kind in Canada to really be a book written by Indigenous people about the state of Indigenous health and well being.”
The authors hope that the book will challenge students to think critically about the Indigenous patient care.
“Indigenous peoples from coast-to-coast including First Nations, Métis and Inuit people probably are the largest holders of knowledge and information about their state of health” said De Leeuw.
All proceeds from the book’s sales will go to the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada.
