Tour de North rolls into PG tonight

The Cops for Cancer Tour de North is stopping in Prince George for a tailgate celebration!

The riders are rolling in to the CN Centre around 5pm, where there will be a by-donation BBQ, music, and games.

The event doubles as a pre-game party for the PG Cougar’s first and final preseason home game.

15 bikers are nearing the final stretch of an 850 kilometre trip from Dawson Creek to Williams Lake to raise money and awareness for the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We’ve had some chilly mornings, some frosty mornings, but by the time we finish school visits the sun is usually out,” says Ride Coordinator Erin Reynolds, “Once it warmed up a bit they had some pretty spectacular riding in the first three days.”

The ride is expected to last one week, but the training and planning has gone on for months.

“They’ve been training, doing 1500 kilometres since we’ve been snow-free,” explains Reynolds, “They’ve been fundraising since May, so it’s a lot of personal dedication and time that they’ve put into this.”

The tailgate party may be just what the riders need to blow off some steam as they reach the city.

“We’ll be presenting them with some awards,” says PG Cougars VP of Business Andy Beesley, “We’re going rain or shine because we aren’t made of sugar in Prince George, and I don’t think a little rain is going to dim the mood or the festivities that are happening here this week.”

The mood has been very bright indeed, as the team has met with several junior team members and their families along the way.

“It means a lot to the team to know that we’re connecting with the people we’re helping,” says Reynolds, “Anytime we can actually connect with them and be there face-to-face, take pictures with them and see them smile makes our day brighter.”

The team has 250 more kilometres to go before they reach Williams Lake, and the Tour de North has already raised more than $178,000.
