French immersion enrolment on the decline in Prince George: Canadian Parents for French

French immersion enrolment in BC’s public schools has declined since the 2019-2020 school year, and the same is true in the Prince George area.

According to Canadian Parents for French (CPF), there were 1,116 French immersion students in School District 57 in 2023-2024, a 0.45 per cent decrease when compared to the year before.

It’s also a 3.38 per cent decrease when compared to five years ago.

CPF notes that province-wide, there were 1,902 fewer students in French immersion in BC’s schools in 2023-2024 when compared to 2019-2020.

“There has been a small but consistent decline in the number of students enrolled in French immersion in public schools in the province over the last four years,” said CPF BC and Yukon President Alex Hughes.

“It’s not a trend we would expect considering the continued popularity of French immersion and the annual wait lists in a number of school districts.”

They noted the French immersion enrolment rate was 8.69 per cent province-wide last school year, with 52,514 students enrolled.
