Third quarter explosion of offence not enough for Kodiaks in loss to Kamloops

It’s a different week but it’s the same story for the Prince George Kodiaks as they fell 43-27 to the Kamloops Broncos last night.

It was a dreadful first half for the Kodiaks’ defence, they were torched by the Broncos’ passing attack.

Broncos Quarterback Clark Snider threw three touchdown passes in the first half, including a 74-yard house call.

Things seemed to go from bad to worse for the Kodiaks when they fumbled the kick return to open the second half and Kamloops scored another touchdown, putting the Broncos up 28-3.

Following the score, the Kodiaks came to life and played the best ten minutes of football they’ve played all season.

A big kick return from Andrew Brown put the Kodiaks in excellent field position, setting up a one-yard touchdown run for Quarterback Sawyer Thiessen.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Kodiaks tried a moonshot-onside kick, and recovered the ball, setting up a four-yard touchdown pass for Thiessen.

Following the score, the Kodiaks tried another moonshot-onside kick, and recovered it again, this time setting up a 31-yard touchdown run for Thiessen.

Following the three-touchdown swing for the Kodiaks, they kicked it away, which led to a Kamloops two-and-out, and a blocked punt that put Prince George in excellent field position.

The Kodiaks ended up with a 30-yard field goal from Brady Harper on the drive to make it 28-27.

Harper hit from 19 yards earlier in the game as well.

“We came out and we competed in the second half,” Thiessen said.

“We gave ourselves a chance to win, we just got to capitalize on the opportunity that they gave us.”

After that it was back to normal for the Kodiaks, giving up a pair of touchdowns in the final quarter.

“We saw it again, we saw inconsistency, we played one quarter of football, there was some moments of fun, but that doesn’t win a football game,” said Kodiaks Head Coach Jamie Boreham.

“We weren’t in the wrong defences, we’re doing good things on offence, and we had receivers dropping footballs, we’ve got a quarterback busting his butt for his team, and we need more people to rally around him.”

With the loss, the Kodiaks drop to 1-5 and the bottom of the BC Football Conference’s standings.

The Kodiaks will have their bye week this week.

“In some situations, bye weeks, you end up with some time off, and tough to have a whole lot of time off when there’s some mistakes and some personnel things you need to work through,” Boreham said.

“It’ll be a long bye week of work, and we’ll come back more prepared.”

“We’ve been going hard since training camp so some of the guys will go home to see their families and feel refreshed, so I think that’s huge, we’ve played quite a few games in a row now,” Thiessen said.

“We’ve got to attack it as well, there’s no time to wait, we’ve got to win out the last half, and that’s the goal. We’ll communicate with the coaches and be on the same page, and attack the following week.”

The Kodiaks next game will be on the road on September 7th, against the Valley Huskers.
