The City of Prince George will be urging the federal government to step up its response to the Syrian refugee crises at the Union of BC Municipalities Convention in Vancouver next week.
On Monday, City Council voted unanimously to forward an emergency resolution asking that Ottawa review and streamline its refugee processing.
“What the Conservative government needs right now, since there is an election going on, is public pressure. There is public pressure and political pressure across the country from them to do more, that’s basically what we are doing.” said Councillor Brian Skakun, who initiated the resolution
“The buck stops with the federal government, if they allow more refugees in then municipalities will be able to do their role and help those families out when they come to our communities.” he added
The resolution also requests Ottawa partner with the United Nations on humanitarian aid in the region and report back to the public on progress being made processing refugees.
During last week’s Federation of Canadian Municipalities Convention in Fredericton, PG Councillor Garth Frizzell was among board members who unanimously passed a similar resolution.
