Province expanding medical travel support for cancer patients

The provincial government has announced it is giving $20 million over the next two years to the Canadian Cancer Society to help support patients who need to travel for cancer treatments.

This investment builds on another $10 million investment made in 2023.

“Already, thousands of patients and caregivers have benefited from the expansion of their programs since last year,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “Now, even more cancer patients who need to travel for care can focus on their treatment without the added worry of costs and travel arrangements.”

According to the province, 1,398 cancer patients in 249 communities were helped by this funding in 2023-24, which was a 724% increase from the year prior.

Patients were also provided with 11,722 free nights at Canadian Cancer Society lodges last year, which used to cost $55 a night.

This includes patients staying in Prince George’s Kordyban Lodge.

The money also helps support the Canadian Cancer Society’s Travel Treatment Fund that gives patient grants for travel expenses, and the Wheels of Hope program that pairs patients and volunteer drivers.
