Canada Post calls on dog owners to help keep carriers safe following increase of incidents in Prince George

Canada Post is asking dog owners to help keep their mail carriers safe.

This follows a recent increase of incidents with dogs in the Prince George area.

“We’ve seen an increase of all types of incidents with dogs,” said Prince George Operations Superintendent Tyler Funk.

“We’ve seen a lot of incidents where dogs are just loose, and we just don’t go and deliver to those addresses because we don’t know what they’re going to do. There’s times where they’re chasing delivery agents off of the property itself if they get out of the fenced yard or out of the screen door, and in the worst case scenario, we’ve seen dog bites, where there’s actually flesh being bitten.”

Funk added their carriers don’t know what each dog is going to do.

“The thing about dogs is they’re territorial, they’re territorial about their place and they’re territorial about their people,” he explained.

“We never know  when we’re going up to address whether or not the dog is going to be friendly towards us.”

Canada Post asks that dog owners:

  • Be careful when you answer the doors, so your dog doesn’t slip out.
  • Keep your dog inside, in a fenced yard or tied up far from the front door or mailbox.
  • Keep front doors and fence gates closed.
  • Keep your dog away from the screen door, even if it is locked.
  • Ensure you have dogs on leashes and under control when out walking.

“We just want to see our delivery agents get home safe every single day,” Funk added.

“If this is something that resonates with our Prince George population of dog owners, then I would absolutely encourage everybody to take the steps to make sure that their mail delivery is safe as possible for our carriers.”
