Olympics: (Updated)

Canada earned the silver medal in women’s rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics.

Canada lost the final 19-12 today (Tuesday) to top-ranked New Zealand after earlier in the day defeating Australia 21-12 in the semifinal.

Canadian athletes have earned a total of half-a-dozen medals; two gold, two silver and two bronze.

The Canadian men’s basketball team is 2-0 at the Olympics after a 93-83 victory over Australia today.

The seventh-ranked Canadians play their next game on Friday (8:15 a.m. PT) against Spain.

17-year-old Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh of Toronto led wire-to-wire capturing gold (Monday) in the women’s 400-metre individual medley.

It is her second medal at the Paris Olympics to go along with a silver in the 400-metre freestyle.

McIntosh is scheduled to also compete in the 200-metre medley and butterfly plus the relay finals.

Canada’s other gold came in women’s judo from Christa Deguchi (in 57-kg class).

She is Canada’s first Olympic champion in judo.

The 28-year-old Deguchi lives and trains in Japan, the country of her birth.

She has competed for Canada for seven years through her Canadian dad.

Canadian divers Nathan Zsombor Murray of Pointe-Claire, Quebec and Rylan Wiens of Regina captured the bronze medal (Monday) in the men’s synchronized 10-metre platform.

Eleanor Harvey of Hamilton is the first Canadian ever to win an Olympic fencing medal when she captured bronze Sunday in women’s foil competition.

The Canadian women’s Olympic soccer team will play its third game on Wednesday (noon PT) against Colombia.

Canada has won both of its games but FIFA has deducted six points from the Canadian women’s soccer team after three coaches were suspended for their role in the drone spying scandal.

Canada is appealing the decision.

MLB: (Jays and Orioles split a doubleheader)

The (50-57) Jays continue a 4-game series against the A.L. East-leading (63-44) Orioles today (3:35 PM) in Baltimore.

Off the field the Jays dealt Justin Turner to the Seattle Mariners for outfield prospect RJ Schreck and then traded Yusei Kikuchi to the Houston Astros for pitcher Jake Bloss, and a pair of infielders Joey Loperfido, and Will Wagner.

Baseball in Korea:

Jared Young of Prince George has signed a pro baseball contract to play in Korea.

The 29-year-old Young started the season with the Memphis Red Birds, the AAA farm club of the St Louis Cardinals.

 

BCFC:

The (1-1) Prince George Kodiaks play their next game in the BC Football Conference Saturday in Langley against the (0-1) Rams.

The Kodiaks, who lost in Langford 45-25 to the Westshore Rebels, have their next home game on August 10th at 6 PM against the Valley Huskers.

CFL:  (Week 9)

The (5-2) B.C. Lions visit the (2-6) Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday to begin the 9th week of the CFL season.

The Lions are tied with (5-2) Saskatchewan for top spot in the West Division.
