In a week dominated by evacuations and wildfires in BC and Alberta, the Prince George Fire Centre has quietly been doing very well in keeping fire risk in the region to a minimum.
Fire Information Officer Pedro Roldan-Delgado credits this largely to weather, saying “We got a variable amount of rain throughout the fire centre this week, some areas ranging from 0 [millimeters of] precipitation to 132, like in western Fort Nelson.”
He said this rain will continue to keep fire activity down throughout the weekend.
“We are forecasted to see lower temperatures, light to moderate winds, and a few more showers,” Roldan-Delgado said. “We will start to get a warming trend, but due to that rain we have received over the week, it has calmed down fire activity and we should not see too many new starts.”
As of yesterday (Friday) afternoon, Roldan-Delgado said the PG Fire Centre has 106 active wildfires, 58 are out of control, none are of note.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, 67 wildfires have been declared out in the last 24 hours across the province, compared to just 15 starts.
The Prince George Fire Centre discovers 40% of its fires through tips from the public. If you see a wildfire, the BC Wildfire Service urges you to call it in to *5555 on your cell phone, or report it online through their website or app.
