Olympics:

Defending champion Canada won its women’s soccer opener 2-1 over New Zealand today (Thursday) at the Paris Olympic Games.

Canada will play its second game on Sunday against France.

Head coach Bev Priestman removed herself from the game after a pair of drone incidents that resulted in two Canadian staff members, including an assistant coach, being sent home.

The opening ceremonies of the Paris Olympic Games will be held on Friday.

The Canadian Olympic Team has a total of 337 athletes.

There are 43 athletes from B.C. to compete in 19 sports, including 13 in Athletics.

39 of the Canadian athletes have captured at least one medal at previous Olympics.

 

BCFC:

Kicker Brady Harper of the Prince George Kodiaks is the BC Football Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.

Harper went two-for-two on field goals connecting from 31 and 37 yards and added three converts in the Kodiaks’ 39-34 victory over the Vancouver Island Raiders.

The Kodiaks visit the defending champion Westshore Rebels Saturday afternoon at 4:00.

Both teams are 1-0.

CFL:  

A battle of division leaders in the CFL tonight (Thursday 4:30) to begin Week 8 of the  season as Saskatchewan plays at Montreal.

Both the Roughriders and Alouettes are 5-1.

The (5-2) B.C. Lions are idle until Thursday, August 1st when they visit the (2-5) Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

MLB: 

Toronto Blue Jays  6  Tampa Bay Rays  3

The (46-55) Jays and the (51-51) Rays play the rubber match of their three game series this afternoon (Thursday 12:07) in Toronto.

Toronto is 3-2 on a 9-game homestand.
