PG Sports Weekend Wrap

The Prince George Cougars are 2-2-0-1 in WHL exhibition play after a 3-2 OT victory over the Kootenay Ice in Kennewick, Washington. 17-year-old rookie import Bartek Bison scored his second goal of the game in overtime.
The Cats outshot the Ice 37-16 as P.G. overcame a 2-0 third period deficit. The Cougars host the Kamloops Blazers Saturday in their final pre-season game (on 94.3 the Goat).

The regular season starts Friday, September 25th when the Cougars entertain the Everett Silvertips.

–A rough opening weekend for the Prince George Spruce Kings in the BCHL. The Wenatchee Wild crushed the Spruce Kings 5-1 Friday and 8-0 Saturday at the Coliseum. In game two, the Wild had 14 players picked up at least one point as Wenatchee outshot P.G. 41-23 before 872 fans. In the opener, the Wild outshot the hosts 50-18, including 22-2 in the 3rd before a season opening crowd of 1,084.

The Spruce Kings have time to regroup with their next games on the road Saturday in Langley and Sunday in Surrey.

–The Cariboo Cougars completed exhibition play with a 2-0 loss to the Burnaby Winter Club in Kelowna to finish with a pre-season record of 4-1. Earlier in Kelowna, the Major Midget Cougars blanked the Okanagan Hockey Academy 6-0 Friday before whipping the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy 7-1 and the Compete Hockey Academy 9-3 on Saturday. The Cats opened a 5-game, 4-day exhibition trip with a 6-0 triumph over the Thompson Blazers in Kamloops.

–The BC Major Midget Hockey League regular season opens this weekend. The Cariboo Cougars host the Valley West Hawks Saturday night at 8 and Sunday afternoon at 12:30 at Kin 1.

–The UNBC Timberwolves are winless after the opening weekend of play in Canada West Soccer. The Lady Timberwolves lost 3-0 to TRU of Kamloops Sunday afternoon after starting the season with a 1-1 tie against UBC Okanagan.

The UNBC men dropped a pair of games on the Island as they lost twice to the University of Victoria: 3-0 Friday and 5-3 Saturday. The Vikes scored four straight goals in the second half of game two to erase a 3-1 deficit.

This weekend: The UNBC women have their first road games when they visit Victoria on Friday and UBC on Saturday.

The UNBC men play at UBCO in Kelowna both Friday and Saturday.

–All the NCSSL winners won the regular season title as well as the playoff championship.

–The Prince George Youth Soccer Association has hired John Ribeiro as its Technical Director. His coaching career started with PGYSA in 2007. For the past two seasons Ribeiro has held the position of Divisional Teams Technical Director for the largest soccer club in Western Canada, Vancouver United FC.
