National average price of one-bedroom rentals up 30% in three years

A recent study from Yahoo Finance reports rent prices have skyrocketed across the province since an April 2021 pandemic low.

According to Rentals.ca, rent for a 1-bedroom unit in Canada has jumped 30% in the last three years – from $1,414 per month 2021 to $1,849 per month in June 2024.

The worst offender in the country is Burnaby, whose average one bedroom rentals have gone up over 53% in that time from $1,656 a month to $2,543.

Vancouver still holds the highest rent prices in Canada, a one bedroom unit costs a monthly average of $2,724.

Prince George was not included in the Rentals.ca data, however, according to statistics posted on the City of Prince George’s website, the average rent was $976 a month in 2021.

As of June 2024, according to Zumper.com’s Rental Market statistics, a one bedroom rental unit costs $1,316 a month in Prince George – a four bedroom costs $2,535.

That would leave Prince George as number 33 of 35 on Rental.ca’s list of most expensive cities to rent, between Regina and Fort MacMurray.
