Environment Canada says the chances are favorable that Prince George sets a new daily temperature record today (Tuesday).
The predicted daily high for the northern capital is 35 degrees, if reached it would smash the previous record for July 9th, which was 32.2 set back in 1926.
Environment Canada Meteorologist, Ken Dosanjh spoke with MyPGNow.com.
“We are possibly looking to break this record by almost three degrees should it happen to pan out. The chances are pretty high and with each excessive day we are noticing temperatures kind of rise by a few degrees every day with today kind of being the peak heat.”
Yesterday (Monday), the previous daily temperature record in PG was 33.9 degrees – Monday’s high (July 8th) only reached 30 degrees in the northern capital.
Other communities across Northern BC established new record-highs including Mackenzie (31.9), Dawson Creek (30.9), Chetwynd (32.4), Cache Creek (40.7), Burns Lake (32.6), Smithers (33.0) and, Terrace (33.1).
Lytton was the hot spot for all of BC with a high of 42.4 degrees, followed by Lillooet at 40.9.
Temperatures are expected to taper off starting on Thursday. In the meantime, the City of Prince George has opened a trio of cooling centres for the next two days.
