Prince George is outshining the province and the country in terms of its unemployment rate.
June’s jobless mark came in at 4.4% according to Stats Canada – the local mark has been slashed in half over the past 12 months after it reached 8.8 during the same month last year.
Analyst, Vince Ferrao told MyPGNow.com there are a couple of reasons for the employment resurgence.
“The number of people employed is currently at 56,300 and a year-ago it was 48,500. Over the same time, the participation rate has increased from 63.8% to 68.”
“Over the past 12 months, we have had more people coming into the labour force and a lot of them have been able to find work.”
BC’s unemployment rate dipped to 5.2% in June after it was 5.6 in May – the second lowest among the provinces trailing only Manitoba (5.1%).
Nationally, Canada’s jobless mark spiked to its highest level in over two years coming in at 6.4%. Statistics Canada says 1,400 jobs were lost in our country.
