City council, along with Lheidli T’enneh Elder Edie Frederick and the citizens of Prince George gathered on the steps of city hall Wednesday afternoon to recognize Queen Elizabeth II as Canada’s longest reigning monarch.
Speaking to the assembly in front of City Hall, Mayor Lyn Hall characterized the Queen’s reign.
“The Queen has united Canada by her example of inclusiveness, dedication and selfless service of which we are deeply proud and which we pledge to try and mirror in our own lives.”
During the ceremony the Union Jack was raised in front of City Hall, after which the assembly sang “God Save the Queen”.
“A number of people living in Prince George have grown up with the monarchy, it’s played a pivotal role in our Canadian history. So I think it’s only appropriate that we recognize that and celebrate the Queens Reign.” said Mayor Hall of the event.
The Queen has a significant place in the City’s history. In 1994 she visited Prince George to officially open the University of Northern BC, which is celebrating it’s 25th anniversary this year.
