It’s been a strong year so far for the Tourism Industry in Prince George.
After setting record numbers for visitors during the Canada Winter Games, Tourism Prince George is reporting an increase in summer traffic as well.
According to the city’s Visitors Centre more than 8,000 people stopped in the city over the Summer, more than 800 of whom came from the US.
Tourism Prince George is pointing to the low Canadian dollar to account for the large number of American visitors.
“I think it definitely has an impact with Americans that have easy access to Canada.” said Tourism Prince George CEO Erica Hummel.
“It doesn’t hurt with the amount of money they spend while they’re here. So instead of maybe eating inside their RV, they’ll probably eat out at a restaurant more often.”
Not only is the low dollar encouraging Americans to travel north, it’s also prompting Canadians to vacation within the country.
“I think stay-cations are very popular while the dollar is so low. People get more value for it if they stay here” said Hummel. “They’ll definitely feel the impact if they go into the States or other places”
Hummel also noted the economic boost generated by increased tourism can last for years to come.
