As Aircraft Mechanics strike looms, WestJet cancels upwards of 25 flights

WestJet has begun cancelling flights, as it faces a possible walkout by its 670 aircraft maintenance engineers

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association pulled its strike threat a week ago after the company agreed to return to the bargaining table.

But it says discussions with the company since then have failed to make progress.

The new strike deadline is tomorrow (Friday) at 4:30 p.m. (PT).

The company says they’ve cancelled 25 flights scheduled for today and tomorrow, affecting some 33-hundred passengers.

WestJet officials say the union’s decision to strike over the Canada Day long weekend appears to be an attempt to force what they describe as “an unreasonable contract.”
