The Prince George Community Foundation has decided it will no longer honour a Citizen of the Year.
Instead, up to five people will receive recognition at the annual banquet.
“With the format of only having one Citizen of the Year, it began to feel like we were dishonouring, in some ways, those other nominees who in many, many cases, could easily be Citizen of the year in any given year,” says Citizen of the Year Chair Teresa Saunders.
Saunders added that honouring more people eliminated a ‘competition factor’.
“We also have found over the years that it was difficult to find people who would agree to have their name put forward as a nominee,” explains Saunders, “They didn’t want to be seen as competitive with others, often their colleagues and friends.”
And that’s not the only change…
People who choose to nominate someone no longer have to go through the long process of assembling a nomination package.
“The Selection Committee will go out and do the leg work to find out more information from someone about that person. So we’ll do the research, rather than asking someone to put together a package as we have in the past.”
The Citizen of the Year Gala will take place on Friday, October 16th, with tickets going on sale on September 10th online and at the Coast Inn front desk.
