The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada is investing $2 million into 11 UNBC research projects over five years.
According to the university, these research projects cover a wide range, including environmental science, engineering, and psychology.
“This is great news for our researchers who will be able to implement the projects they have developed,” UNBC Vice-President of Research and Innovation Dr. Paula Wood-Adams told My PG Now. “It is going to set them up for their career.”
Seven of the eleven researchers are in the early stages of their career.
Wood-Adams noted the timing of the funding is great because many of UNBC’s original staff and researchers who have been with the school for 30 years are starting to retire.
“We are in a period of change, of bringing in a lot of new people,” Wood-Adams said. “It is so great to see this success, for years they will be able to do their research and move on to even greater things.”
She explained the projects that UNBC is undertaking with this funding will “provide the understanding, knowledge, and technology for the future.”
The funding will also have a positive impact on UNBC’s students; Wood-Adams said new research assistant positions, ranging from a couple months to a couple years, will open as a result.
“It will allow students to get involved in the research, do the experiments, go on a field trip, take the results and turn that into new understanding and knowledge that can be published and shared,” she said.
