The Prince George RCMP held their annual Law Enforcement Torch Run this afternoon (Thursday).
The event benefits Special Olympics BC, around two dozen athletes met the RCMP members outside the 5th Avenue detachment to take part in today’s run through downtown.
“This event is a good opportunity for us to help them fundraise and send them to the summer games in 2025,” Corporal Jennifer Cooper explained.
“The athletes are usually incredibly excited, they approach me all through the year telling me how excited they are.”
Adrian Rosen was one of those excited athletes, who said he participates in the parade because “it raises awareness for the Special Olympics here in town.”
“[The Special Olympics] give us a chance to travel to other places,” he said, adding his favorite part of competing is “the comradery.”
Rosen will not have to travel far for the upcoming games in 2025, they are being held in Prince George.
“It is very exciting,” he said. “We need a lot of volunteers to give time to make this a great event for the community.”
He competes in soccer, 10 pin bowling, and club fit.
Marinka Van Hage is another local athlete who took part in the parade and will compete in Prince George next summer.
She said she competes in 12 different sports across the summer and winter games, including power lifting, track and field, soccer, and bocce.
The police also set up a by-donation barbeque outside the detachment. Between that and event sponsors, Cooper said the RCMP are able to raise a few hundred dollars each year.
