Sunday will be a busy day in Prince George as residents will have a trio of causes to walk for.
The first walk of the day is the Hospice Colour Walk, which will take place in the CN Centre parking lot, starting at 10:00 am.
“People walk around, and we have tables that will just throw the various different coloured powder at them,” said Hospice Executive Director Donna Flood.
The event at the CN Centre is the culmination of the month-long fundraiser for Hospice.
“It’s encouraging people to get out and walk 100k in the month of May,” Flood explained.
“We’re encouraging people to share their memories, tell us who they’re walking for.”
Funds from the Colour Walk will go towards the Home Hospice program.
Over in Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, the MS Society is hosting the MS Walk starting at 11:00 am, the 26th MS Walk to happen in Prince George.
“It’s a way for us to raise funds for research and supports, the research is for a cure and other medications that can help us lead productive daily lives,” said Ashley Provencher, Executive Committee Member for the MS Society in Prince George.
“We walk from the sidewalk on 17th Avenue, all the way around the park on the outside, it’s a 2.5 km walk, which is pretty short so it’s doable for almost everybody.”
In addition to the walk, the MS Society hosted a karaoke fundraiser at the Bon Voyage this past Saturday, raising $3,500.
“Your support matters, whether it’s coming and just walking with us, or donating dollars, your support matters,” Provencher said.
“A lot of don’t realize what MS actually is, it’s a neurological disease that looks different in every single person, which is why it’s really hard to find that so-called cure.”
The third walk of the day will be the Alzheimer’s Walk, which starts at 1:00 pm at the YMCA.
“It’ll be mostly inside the gymnasium at the YMCA, and then we’re going to do a short walk around the YMCA, so that it stays really accessible for everyone,” said Mackenzie Kerr, Chair of the Alzheimer’s Walk in Prince George.
“We’re going to have food and drink, we’re going to have lots of community vendors and organizations that can support people that are struggling with dementia.”
The Alzheimer’s Walk in Prince George is one of many happening across Canada.
“All the funds raised go towards research, programming, and just supports for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s and their families,” Kerr said.
All three were held on the same day last year as well.
