Stellat’en hosting loonie auction for young man with cancer

The people of Vanderhoof and Fraser Lake are coming together to assist a young man who’s been diagnosed with cancer.

25-year-old Walter Schmidt was diagnosed with colon cancer last week, and his mother, Charline, says he’ll be receiving treatment quickly.

“He was released from the Prince George hospital on Wednesday. They said we could bring him home for ten days to strengthen up his immunity, from there, they’re going to do chemo.”

Members of the Stellat’en First Nation are collecting items for a loonie auction later this week.

“We’ll put an item up for bid, and people pay a loonie for a chip,” explains volunteer Kimberly Albinet, “Once everyone is done buying chips, we draw a chip, and whoever’s number matches wins the item.”

All funds raised will help the family cover expenses during Walter’s treatment.

“The community support has been great,” says Albinet, “We’ve had a lot of donations come in already, and there’s more on the way.”

The Fundraiser takes place at the Stella New Hall at 4:30 on Thursday.
