Lheidli T’enneh Councillor removed following criminal charge

John West has been removed from the Lheidli T’enneh Council.

The First Nation made the announcement this afternoon (Friday), citing a policy that states “Any member of Chief and Council charged in a Court of Law with an Indictable Offence will be presumed innocent until proven otherwise, but in the interest of providing sound, stable government, it is expected that the Chief or Council member will step down until the legal matter is resolved or the normal election procedure occurs, whichever comes first.”

In a statement posted to social media, Lheidli T’enneh’s Chief and Council say West did not resign, and the rest of the council “has taken the necessary step of removal.”

West was suspended from his role late last month after he was arrested in the House of Ancestors on April 26th.
