Northern Health dedicated to combating capacity issues

Northern Health is reporting great progress when it comes to grappling with long-standing capacity issues.

Three projects have been implemented to help since February, including the installation of 26 new beds at Gateway Retirement Home.

Rapid Home Mobilisation Support is also highly utilized.

“They can stay at home with added support, rather than being admitted to the hospital,” says Chief Operating Officer Michael McMillan, “It’s one of the things we know significantly impacts length of stay, so if a senior gets admitted for a few hours, or a day or two, we’re rapidly getting support into their home.”

However, it may take a while to realize the impact of the projects.

“Summer is often a time of the year when capacity is lower,” added McMillan, “It’s difficult to tell whether we’ve had the effect that we anticipated. So we’re hoping as we go into the fall these effects will still be felt.”

He went on to say these issues affect most cities across Canada, and the hard work of people here has made a great difference.
