City Council approves purchase of Structural Protection Unit

Prince George will have a structural protection unit.

City Council approved the purchase of the unit at last night’s (Monday) meeting, with a budget of $180,000.

Funding for the unit came from Miracle Theatre’s production of A Comedy of Tenors, a total amount of money raised by the production is expected to be announced soon.

Manager of Emergency Programs Tanya Spooner noted the unit may not be here for the start of fire season, but it will be here later this summer.

“We actually have a plan to go through the grant process through the Community Resiliency Investment Fund Grant in the 2024 cycle, so in this fall, where we will start the grant process to purchase a second one,” Spooner added.

The unit works by placing sprinklers high on a building, creating a “humidity bubble” that extinguishes embers and other firebrands before they can ignite a structure.
