Two rugby clubs from the Northern and Cariboo regions are among 22 from across the country to receive cash through the Community Rugby Fund.
The Aurora Wolves, which is a regional team, consisting of youth from Prince Rupert, Prince George, Williams Lake, Terrace and, the Peace region is being recognized for its school-to club pathway development program.
Aurora has six teams in total ranging from U18, U16 and, U14 for boys and girls.
A high school rugby tournament is also slated for Duchess Park on May 4th. On the following day (May 5th), the Wolves will be holding their final ID camp.
In addition, the Williams Lake Rugby Football Club is getting money in recognition of its Indigenous Participating Programming and school-to club pathway development.
This year, Rugby Canada received 67 applications from across Canada.
49 applications have been approved since the Community Rugby Fund began in 2021.
This year, priority was given to rugby clubs, schools or community organizations who applied for grant funding that focused on cultivating the community game with special consideration given to projects that:
- Create or develop a school-to-club pathway to increase the number of registered rugby players participating in club rugby.
- Enhance inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility of rugby within a club, educational institution, or community organization, particularly for Black, Indigenous, 2SLGBTQI+, and newcomers to Canada.
- Create new programs or develop existing programs that aim to introduce women and girls to the game of rugby.
- Build program delivery capacity through the development of Coaches or Match Officials within the rugby community.
