Council looking for rec centre contractor

Council for the District of Vanderhoof has given renovations to the Credit Union building the green light.

Director of Community Development Tom Clement says a design is already in place…

“The architects have come up with a design to change the entire bottom so we can house the YMCA in there, the facilities they have, plus we will have community space, with community space up top as well.”

Estimates given by Chernoff Thompson Architects North are roughly $140,000 over the $350,000 budget set by council.

The costs for the main building are estimated at $361,000, with apartment wing costing $99,000.

the proposed renovations only include the interior of the building, and don’t include outside expenses.

At last night’s meeting, Council had the options to renovate only the main building, fund the entire project, or go back to the drawing board to reduce costs.

After a brief discussion, Council decided to fund the entire project at once.

“They recognized the original costings were a guesstimate, and when the final numbers come in they are sometimes over,” says Clement, “We’re getting on it right away. We’re looking for contractors to do the building, and we’re moving forward to get the work done now.”
