Police release tax fraud warning

Prince George RCMP are reminding the public to be wary of tax fraud.

Police say criminals are calling people posing as the Canada Revenue Agency and repeatedly call or email their potential victims.

In the most common scenario, the fraudster tells a person they owe ‘back taxes’ as a result of an audit, and ask for immediate payment via a money wiring company.

In some cases, the caller demands the money immediately, or an arrest warrant will be issues.

The criminals have also been known to impersonate immigration officers who threaten deportation if payment isn’t made.

If you actually owe money, the payment process isn’t immediate, and you will be given much more warning than a phone call.

People need to contact the CRA, Border Services, or the RCMP if they think they are being scammed.

Police say a simple Google search can debunk a fraudster’s story and save you a massive headache.
