The lawyer for two north-eastern BC First Nations says ‘irreparable harm’ will be done if old-growth forest clearing continues for Site C Dam prep.
John Gailus has asked the BC Supreme Court to issue a stop-work older to halt phase one of the project, and West Moberly Chief Roland Willson is worried about eagle nests and beaver dams being destroyed.
BC Hydro Community Relations Manager David Conway says there is a system in place when it comes to dealing with eagle nests.
“We have to determine how many nests are active, and no removal of active nests will occur. If a nest is active, there will be a buffer zone around the nesting site… If a nest is inactive, when possible, we will remove the nest intact and move them to nesting platforms. We will be building approximately 30 nesting platforms throughout the Peace River Valley.”
The stop-work order would halt construction by a year, which BC Hydro says would tack an extra $355 million onto the final bill.
In the meantime, clearing is still underway, and PG contractor A.L. Sims and Sons Ltd. is working on improving access roads.
Construction bulletins will be updated every few weeks on the BC Hydro Website.
