BCHL:

It is playoff time for the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The (16-35-3) Spruce Kings visit the (38-10-3-3) Penticton Vees tonight and Saturday at 7:00 in the first two games of their best-of-seven first-round BCHL series.

The first place Vees won five of the six regular season meetings against the last place Spruce Kings.

The series will shift to Prince George for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The if necessary games are set for April 12th in Penticton, April 14th in Prince George and April 16th in Penticton.

KIJHL:

The Kootenay International Junior Hockey League has announced that the North Okanagan Knights franchise has been sold and relocated to Quesnel and will be known as the River Rush.

Quesnel provides the Cariboo with a third team in the KIJHL for the 2024-25 season.

The others are 100 Mile House Wranglers and Williams Lake Mustangs (formerly the Summerland Steam).

 

WHL:

Two more Prince George Cougars are up for WHL awards.

67-goal scorer Zac Funk is the B.C. Division nominee for Player of the Year while Captain Hudson Thornton is one of four finalists in the running for Defenceman of the Year.

The P.G. Cougars start the second round of the WHL playoffs in one week.

The Cougars will host the first two games of the Western Conference semifinal series against an undetermined opponent on Friday and Saturday (April 12th and 13th).

Prince George is riding a 13-game winning streak after sweeping the Spokane Chiefs, taking the fourth and final game 3-2.

Curling:

Canada’s Team Brad Gushue from St. John’s, N.L., has advanced to the semi-finals after a second place finish in the round robin with a 10-2 record at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship in Switzerland.

Team Gushue beat Japan 9-3 and Switzerland 8-1 today (Friday) after splitting his two games on Thursday; a 7-4 victory over Norway was followed by a 6-5 loss to first place Sweden.

On Saturday, Canada will play the winner of the #3 Scotland/#6 USA game in the semis.

The other semi will feature #1 Sweden against the winner of #4 Germany/#5 Italy.

The semifinal winners play for gold on Sunday.

The (3-4) Toronto Blue Jays continue a season-opening 10-game road trip today (Friday 10:05 AM) against the (6-1) New York Yankees.
