The provincial government has introduced legislation that would allow recognized First Nations to purchase and hold land.
Currently, the only way First Nations can own land is through a treaty.
Otherwise, they have to create corporations or set up other arrangements to make a purchase.
Indigenous Relations Minister Murray Rankin says the proposal would remove what he calls a “long-standing and discriminatory barrier, ” and allow First Nations to directly acquire new land.
