WHL:

The Portland Winterhawks have moved into first place in the WHL Western Conference, one point ahead of the Prince George Cougars.

The (42-15-2-1) Winterhawks outscored the last-place Blazers 6-4 in Kamloops Wednesday night outshooting the hosts 58-27.

Both Portland and P.G. have eight regular season games remaining.

The (41-15-1-3) Cougars host the (29-27-4) Vancouver Giants Friday night at 7:00 and Saturday night at 6:00 before playing five straight games on the road.

P.G. will end its regular season on Saturday, March 23rd against the Kamloops Blazers on Retro Night with a Mega 50/50 jackpot that is guaranteed at $50,000.

Proceeds go to the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.

The (40-17-7) Vancouver Canucks conclude a 3-game road trip tonight (7:00 start) against the (33-22-7) Golden Knights in Vegas.

It is one of 12 Thursday games in the NHL with Winnipeg the only Canadian team idle.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings visit the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday and the West Kelowna Warriors on Saturday.

With eight games left in the regular season, the (14-29-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, nine points behind the (19-25-2) Cranbrook Bucks who are in 7th.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The U18 Cariboo Cougars host the Vancouver North West Hawks this weekend at Kin 1 in a best-of-3 quarterfinal series in the BC Elite Hockey League.

Games are scheduled for Friday afternoon at 3:45, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 and if necessary, Sunday morning at 11:45.

The (26-8-2) U18 Cougars finished the regular season 3rd in the 9-team BC Elite Hockey league while the (13-20-0-3) Hawks were in 6th place.

Para Biathlon:

The Para Biathlon World Championships began (Wednesday) at the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club.

There are 185 athletes from 20 countries participating over the 12 days of competition.

High School Basketball:

The BC School Sports Boys Basketball Provincial Championships continue today (Thursday) and wrap up Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

There are 64 teams split into four 16-team provincial tournaments with the finals set for Sunday.

Cedars Christian and McBride lost their first two games in 1A. Fort St. James lost its opener.

Nechako Valley started with a pair of losses in 2A.

College Heights lost its first two games in 3A.

PGSS dropped its opener but won its second game in 4A.

NBA:

The (23-39) Toronto Raptors start a 4-game road trip tonight at 6:00 in Phoenix against the (36-26) Suns.

Curling:

There are no unbeaten teams left at the 2024 Montana’s Brier in Regina.

B.C. (Catlin Schneider) is 4-4 after eight games.

Two-time defending champion Brad Gushue (Canada from St. John’s, Newfoundland) is 5-2.

The eight-game round-robin continues today with the top three teams in each of the two pools advancing to the playoffs.

The final will be played on Sunday with the winner to represent Canada at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship on March 30-April 7 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
