WHL:

Prince George Cougars  5  Spokane Chiefs  4  (OT Saturday)

Down 4-2 late in the 3rd the Cougars rallied for the victory to the delight of 3,960 fans at CN Centre.

Viliam Kmec tallied to make it 4-3 with 63 seconds left and shortly after Zac Funk notched his league-leading and team-record 59th goal of the season on the power play with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Those late tallies came with goalie Ty Young pulled for an extra attacker.

That set the stage for the Riley Heidt winner at 2:03 of OT.

Spokane Chiefs  5  Prince George Cougars  4  (OT Friday)

Brayden Crampton scored at 1:11 of overtime before 3,188 fans in PG.

The (41-15-1-3) Cougars are riding an 11-game point streak and lead the Western Conference by one point over the (41-15-2-1) Portland Winterhawks.

Prince George has 8 games remaining and Portland has 9 left.

The Cougars host the (29-27-4) Vancouver Giants on Friday and Saturday.

Vancouver is 6th in the Western Conference.

Merritt Centennials  3  Prince George Spruce Kings  2  (Saturday)

Luke Pfoh snapped a 2-2 tie with a minute left in the third to give the Centennials the win.

Vernon Vipers  7  Prince George Spruce Kings  5  (Friday)

The Spruce Kings visit the Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday and the West Kelowna Warriors on Saturday.

With 8 games left in the regular season, the (14-29-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, nine points behind the (19-25-2) Cranbrook Bucks who are in 7th.

Special Olympics:

Five P.G. athletes, David Dunn (snowshoeing), Marinka Van Hage (snowshoeing), Lance Pattinson (bowling), Sam Russell (curling), and Spencer Rourke (curling), competed at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.

Dunn captured a gold and a silver while Van Hage earned a pair of silver.

High School Basketball:

None of the North Central teams finished in the top five at the 2024 BC School Sports Girls Basketball Championships in Langley.

College Heights placed 7th and Duchess Park ended up 11th in AAA.

Cedars Christian was 7th and Bulkley Valley Christian 15th in 1 A.

Nechako Valley came 16th (last) in AA.

16 teams competed in each of the Provincials.

The (23-38) Raptors conclude a 4-game homestand Tuesday night (4:30) against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Curling:

The 2024 Montana’s Brier is taking place in Regina.

18 teams, including two-time defending champion Brad Gushue (Canada from St. John’s, Newfoundland), are playing a complete eight-game round-robin within their 9-team pool.

From there, the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.

The final will be played on Sunday, March 10th with the winner to represent Canada at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship on March 30-April 7 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The U18 Cariboo Cougars will start the playoffs at home against the Vancouver North West Hawks at Kin 1.

Games in the best-of-three quarterfinals are set for Friday afternoon at 3:45, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 with the if needed game Sunday morning at 11:45.

The (26-8-2) U18 Cougars finished the regular season 3rd in the 9-team BC Elite Hockey league.

The (13-20-0-3) Hawks ended up in 6th place.
