High School Basketball:

The 2024 BC School Sports Girls Basketball Championships are underway at the
Langley Events Centre.

A total of 64 teams are competing in the 4-day tournament.

In 1 A, #8 Cedars Christian won its opener to advance to the quarterfinals.

In 2 A, #14 Nechako Valley lost its first game to drop down to the consolation.

In 3 A, #8 College Heights began with a victory but #6 Duchess Park lost its opener.

UNBC Timberwolves:

UNBC Timberwolves guard Justin Sunga has been named the U SPORTS Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, making him the first UNBC player to ever receive that honour.

The announcement came a day after he was selected Canada West Player of the Week.

Sunga helped the Timberwolves to a 3-1 record and a bronze medal performance in the Canada West playoffs.

In four games he averaged 13 points, 9 assists and 4 1/2 rebounds.

 

WHL:

The Prince George Cougars got help on the WHL out-of-town scoreboard Wednesday night.

The Moose Jaw Warriors beat the Winterhawks 4-3 in Portland.

This leaves Portland two points behind Prince George for first in the Western Conference with the (39-15-2-1) Winterhawks having a game in hand.

The (40-15-0-3) Cougars, riding a 9-game point streak, host the (24-28-4-1) Spokane Chiefs on Friday and Saturday.

The Chiefs lost 5-2 on Wednesday to the Blazers in Kamloops.

Spokane is in the Western Conference’s 8th and final playoff spot.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings visit the (26-17-1) Vernon Vipers on Friday and the (18-22-3-1) Merritt Centennials on Saturday.

With 10 games left in the regular season, the (14-27-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, nine points behind the Centennials and the (19-25-2) Cranbrook Bucks.

Connor McDavid scored at 4:33 of overtime.

The (38-16-7) Vancouver Canucks, who have lost five of their last six games, host the (29-19-10) LA Kings tonight at 7:00.

It is one of a dozen Thursday games in the NHL.

Vancouver is tied with the NY Rangers for first in the overall standings, one point ahead of both Florida and Boston.

Ringette:

The Ringette Zone Provincials will be held in Prince George at the Kin Centres and Elks Centre.

The competition runs on Friday (9 to 9), Saturday (8 to 8) and Sunday (championship games).

Divisions include U14, U16, U19 and Open A.

About 270 zone players will take part, with 60 players in the 18+ open category.

The loss ended the Raptors’ season-high 3-game win streak.

The (22-37) Raptors continue a 4-game homestand Friday (4:30 PM) against the Golden State Warriors.

Curling:

The 2024 Montana’s Brier starts Friday in Regina.

The 18-team field is headed by two-time defending champion Brad Gushue and his team from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

There are two pools of nine.

Teams will play a complete eight-game round-robin within their pools.

From there, the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.

The final will be played on Sunday, March 10th with the winner to represent Canada at the 2024 World Men’s Curling Championship March 30-April 7 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Special Olympics:

Five P.G. athletes, Lance Pattinson (bowling), Sam Russell (curling), Spencer Rourke (curling), David Dunn (snowshoeing), and Marinka Van Hage (snowshoeing) are competing this week at the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary.
