WHL:

With 11 points (4G-7A) in four games, all victories, Riley Heidt of the Prince George Cougars is the WHL Player of the Week.

The 18-year-old Heidt, who is riding a seven-game point streak, has 101 points (32G-69A) in 56 games to lead the league in scoring.

His 32 goals and 101 points both represent career bests, while his 69 assists are three shy of his career mark of 72, set during the 2022-23 season.

The WHL has also announced that Vancouver Giants forward Cameron Schmidt is the
Rookie of the Week.

The 17-year-old product of Prince George scored four goals and had a plus-2 rating in three games as the Giants went 2-1.

The (40-15-0-3) PG Cougars, with 10 regular season games left, are in the 1st place in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the (39-14-2-1) Portland Winterhawks and three in front of the (38-18-2-2) Everett Silvertips.

Prince George is riding a 9-game point streak and will host the (24-27-4-1) Spokane Chiefs on Friday and Saturday.

The Chiefs are holding the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Cougars are coming off of Saturday’s 6-5 shootout victory over Kelowna.

The Vancouver Canucks host the (26-21-8) Pittsburgh Penguins tonight (Tuesday) at 7:00.
The (38-18-6) Canucks are tied with the (34-12-14) Boston Bruins for first in the overall NHL standings with 82 points in 60 games.

BCHL:

The Prince George Spruce Kings are down to their final 10 regular season games.

They visit the (26-17-1) Vernon Vipers on Friday and the Merritt Centennials on Saturday.

Prince George doubled Vernon 4-2 on Saturday to end a six-game losing streak before 1,275 hometown fans.

The (14-27-3) Spruce Kings are last in the 8-team Interior Division, nine points behind the (18-22-3-1) Centennials and the (19-25-2) Cranbrook Bucks.

BC Elite Hockey League:

The (26-8-2) U18 Cariboo Cougars finished the regular season 3rd in the 9-team BC Elite Hockey league.

They were six points behind the (28-4-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs and seven points back of the (30-5-1) Thunderbirds.

Fraser Valley beat Cariboo 8-6 and 6-0 on the weekend in Abbotsford.

Canada West men’s basketball:

The UNBC Timberwolves returned to P.G. from Winnipeg with a bronze medal from the Canada West men’s basketball tournament.

It was the first-ever Canada West medal for UNBC.

The Timberwolves outscored the Calgary Dinos 94-80 in the game for 3rd and 4th in the 12-team tournament.

UNBC finished 3-1 with its only loss to the Victoria Vikes.

The Vikes ended up with gold for the third straight year.

NBA:

Toronto Raptors  130  Indiana Pacers  122

The (22-36) Raptors start a 4-game homestand Wednesday (4:30) against the (33-24) Dallas Mavericks.

Toronto is riding a season-high 3-game win streak.

Curling:  

After going 11-0 at the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary, the Rachel Homan rink from Ottawa will prepare to represent Canada at the world women’s curling championship in Sydney, Nova Scotia March 16-24.

Homan won her 4th national championship after a 5-4 victory over Jennifer Jones of Manitoba in the final.

It was the last Scotties for the 49-year-old Jones, who has announced her retirement.

Jones leaves with six Canadian women’s curling titles.
