Prince George Cougars  8  Seattle Thunderbirds  1  (Monday)

The Cougars put the game away early with two unanswered goals in the first period and six more unanswered goals in the second before a full house of 6,027 fans at CN Centre.

Riley Heidt scored twice and added an assist for the Cougars, who had 14 different players pick up at least one point.

Prince George extended its home winning streak to 5 games.

On the “Cougars Fight Cancer” game, the mega 50-50 mega jackpot reached $142,750, in support of the BC Cancer Foundation.

The (37-15-0-3) Cougars host the (19-32-2) Thunderbirds again tonight with Prince George just one point out of the Western Conference lead.

Alberni Valley Bulldogs  7  Prince George Spruce Kings  3 (Monday)

The Bulldogs erased a 3-2 deficit by scoring five straight third-period goals in just over six minutes.

It was the third loss in four days for the Spruce Kings and their 5th straight loss overall.

BC Elite Hockey League:  

The U18 Cariboo Cougars conclude their BC Elite Hockey League regular season with a doubleheader against the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds on Saturday night at 5:30 and Sunday at noon in Abbotsford.

The (26-6-2) U18 Cougars, who have won six straight, are in third place, six points behind the (28-4-2-2) Vancouver North East Chiefs and three points back of the (28-5-1)  Thunderbirds.

Canada West basketball:

The 12th-ranked UNBC Timberwolves will play the #5 UBC Thunderbirds in an elimination game Wednesday night at 6:00 in Winnipeg in the men’s Canada West basketball playoffs.

Despite finishing with the 10th-best record at 9-11, the T-Wolves rank 12th in RPI, setting the stage for the second-ever playoff meeting between UNBC and UBC.

The winner will advance to face the #4 ranked hosts from Manitoba on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

During the 2023-24 regular season, the TWolves split their two home matchups with UBC.

Speedskating: 

Former Prince George Blizzard speedskater Carolina Hiller finished 20th in the Women’s 500m at the International Skating Union World Championships in Calgary.

A day earlier on Thursday, Hiller and her two teammates captured gold while setting a Canadian Speedskating record in the Team Sprint. Allison Desmarais of Vanderhoof competed in the Women’s 1000m finishing 23rd on Saturday.

The 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts is taking place this week in Calgary.

A total of 18 teams are playing a complete eight-game round-robin within their pools.

From there, the top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs.
