Province expands liquor service training

The province is amping up liquor service training with a new special events serving course.

The course takes aim at serving at events with less than 500 people in attendance, like weddings, festivals, and community events.

Paid and volunteer servers, licence holders, and workers at more than 5600 restaurants and liquor stores across BC will be required to take either Special Event Server or Serving It Right.

“It has been in development for the past 6 months, and it will become mandatory in September for all licensees at events with less than 500 guests,” says go2HR CEO Arlene Keis, “It was recommended that there be a new course that was targeting smaller special events that previously didn’t have to have their servers or licencees have any kind of training for responsible beverage service.”

The course will tackle topics like when and how to cut somebody off, and how to spot intoxication.

The SES program will be offered for $20, $15 cheaper than the more on-depth Serving It Right, but the certification must be renewed every five years.

The Special Events Server training program is now available at Specialeventserver.com.
