UNBC Alum to tackle Appalachian Trail for mental health services

Prince George resident Leland McKeeman has an enormous task before him: the Appalachian Trail.

McKeeman will make the trek across 14 states to raise money for mental health services.

If he reaches $10 goal for every mile he covers, funds raised will total $21,810.

For McKeeman, the cause hits close to home.

Diagnosed with bi-polar disorder at 19, he found it a struggle to get help in Northern BC.

“Currently, the wait times to see a psychiatrist in Prince George is 2 or 3 month so it’s quite difficult to get treatment right away.”

The funds will go to the Hike for Mental Health charity, which will direct money to the Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation.

The foundation provides grants for those working on research into mental health.
