Warm weather not a problem for Teck BC Cup at Otway

The Caledonia Nordic Ski Club played host to the Teck BC Cup this weekend.

Despite warm weather, the provincial Cross Country skiing competition, which brought 300 athletes from across BC to the Prince George area, went well.

“We got really, really lucky, yesterday (Saturday), all the sprint races went and we didn’t have the rain during the sprint races,” said Chair of the Local Organizing Committee Kevin Pettersen.

“Then overnight it got below freezing so the course set up really nice for today. (Sunday)”

Full results can be found here.

Pettersen added the event was good practice for the club before hosting the 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships and the Para Nordic World Cup, which are coming soon.

“We use this as a test event for getting everybody, all the officials, all the volunteers, everybody prepared for that,” he explained.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to work out things here and try out some different things for venue dressing.”

Pettersen added they’ll be working to get more artificial snow made between now and March.

He said it’s just over a month away before national teams are welcomed into the Prince George area.

“We just want to make sure people participate in these events however, whether it’s as spectators or volunteers,” Pettersen said.

He added there will be a park-and-ride service that will run from the Civic Centre out to Otway.
