Prince George RCMP cleared by IIO in March 2023 death

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) will not be referring a matter in which a man was shot and killed by an RCMP officer south of Prince George to Crown Counsel for consideration of charges.

On March 16th, 2023, the Prince George RCMP received a 911 call from a family member of the man, saying he was suicidal and he “wanted a cop to shoot him.”

When he was located parked in his vehicle on the side of Highway 97 south of Prince George, he reportedly ran at the subject officer with a knife.

The subject officer fired five rounds from his service pistol, striking the man three times.

After realizing the man was seriously wounded, officers commenced first aid attempts very quickly.

An Emergency Response Team medic arrived on scene and took over, and then paramedics attended.

The man was declared deceased at the scene.

Through thorough investigation and witness accounts, (six civilian witnesses and seven witness police officers), the IIO determined the officer had reasonable grounds to believe he was threatened with death or grievous bodily harm.

The IIO’s full report can be found here.
