Old Man Winter is expected to make his first appearance in 2024.
Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for our area with 10 centimetres expected to fall between tonight and Tuesday evening.
It covers Prince George, Stuart – Nechako near Vanderhoof. Cariboo – north including Cottonwood and north of Quesnel along Highway 97, Cariboo – south including Horsefly.
A Pacific frontal wave and a strong low-pressure system will arrive in BC today (Monday).
Be prepared to adjust your driving to changing road conditions.
In addition, temperatures will be getting a lot more frigid according to Environment Canada Meteorologist Alyssa Charbonneau who spoke with Vista Radio.
“It’s a big departure compared to what we have been seeing so far this winter where we have had some very warm conditions through December but now it’s going to be a period of some very cold temperatures. We do have for the Prince George/Vanderhoof area daytime highs of around minus thirty and overnight lows dropping below minus 40 in the forecast.”
After being spoiled with spring-like weather over the past couple of months, which included a couple of temperature records set at the end of December it will be a harsh dose back to reality for area residents who will season below-seasonal values for the first time this winter.
Charbonneau added if you do plan to be outside, dress for the conditions.
“We have not had a lot of cold weather so it really is a really good reminder to make sure that you are layered appropriately. If you are outdoors, take breaks to warm up inside and plan your activities accordingly. That is very important as there are health risks as temperatures get that low.”
She expects the cold snap to end sometime next week.
